Immediate help — free and 24 hours
GamCare — National Gambling Helpline
Freephone 0808 8020 133, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Staffed by trained advisers. You do not need to identify yourself or explain your situation before calling. Live chat is also available at gamcare.org.uk. If you are supporting someone else who you believe has a problem, GamCare also has resources for friends and family.
GamStop — UK Self-Exclusion Register
Visit gamstop.co.uk. GamStop is a free service that registers a self-exclusion with every UKGC-licensed operator simultaneously. You set the duration: six months, one year, or five years. During the exclusion, operators are required to prevent you from opening new accounts or using existing ones. The scheme does not cover unlicensed offshore operators — another reason to use only UKGC-licensed sportsbooks.
BeGambleAware
Visit begambleaware.org. BeGambleAware provides self-assessment tools, guidance for setting a personal budget, and signposting to local support services. The site also explains the difference between recreational betting and problem gambling, and how to have a conversation with someone you are concerned about.
NHS Gambling Clinics
The National Health Service now funds specialist gambling treatment clinics in several regions. A GP referral is the usual entry point, though some clinics accept self-referrals. The National Problem Gambling Clinic in London (part of the NHS) accepts referrals from across England. Waiting times vary; contact your local IAPT or mental health service for current information.
Practical tools available from UKGC-licensed operators
Every sportsbook listed on our homepage is required by UKGC rules to offer the following tools to customers. If you cannot find them easily in your account dashboard, contact the operator's customer support directly:
- Deposit limits — daily, weekly, or monthly caps on how much you can put into your account. Once reduced, limits take effect immediately. Increases require a 24-hour cooling-off period.
- Loss limits — a ceiling on how much you can lose within a set period. Applies to net losses from settled bets.
- Session time limits — automatic prompts or logouts after a specified period of continuous use.
- Reality checks — periodic pop-up notifications showing how long you have been logged in and your net position in the session.
- Cooling-off periods — a short break (typically 24 hours to 6 weeks) during which you cannot log in or place bets. Differs from self-exclusion in that it ends automatically.
- Self-exclusion — a longer-term block (minimum six months) on your account. UKGC rules require operators to honour this for the duration you request and to refer you to GamStop on request.
Recognising when it has become a problem
Rugby betting, like any form of wagering, can shift from a leisure activity to a compulsive behaviour gradually and without clear warning signs. Common indicators include: betting with money set aside for household bills or rent; chasing losses by placing larger bets immediately after losing; concealing the amount you are spending from family members; feeling irritable or anxious when you are not able to bet; and thinking about betting during working hours or when trying to sleep.
None of these indicators means you have a diagnosable condition. They are signals worth taking seriously. The organisations listed above are equipped to help you work through them at whatever pace suits you.
For under-18s
This site is for adults only. If you are under 18, you should not be using it. If you are concerned about someone under 18 who may be accessing gambling content, GamCare has specific resources for parents and young people.
